Demolition for Change – The 1990s Gentrification of the LES
Gentrification is when wealthier, usually white, people arrive in an existing urban neighborhood and cause changes in the community. These changes are usually very complicated and contradictory. The changes include an increase in median income of the neighborhood, increases in rents and home prices, development of luxury housing, and a disturbance of the neighborhood’s character. The term “gentrification” turned 50 in 2014, when Next City first created this timeline. Originally coined to describe organic population shifts witnessed in London’s inner neighborhoods, “gentrification” has come to encapsulate cultural trends, economic cycles and discrete public policies. However, gentrification has had a far wider reach throughout New York City—notably in Chinatown, where rents continue to rise, forcing people to move into affordable housing. As in other neighborhoods, New York City’s system of handling the displacement caused by gentrification disregards the cultural ties that Chinatown residents have to their surroundings. 2021-02-19
